- Beyond the 'Wild West' : The Gold Rush in Northern
Niger.
/ : Mathieu Pellerin. - Geneva : the Small Arms Survey, Security
Assessment in North Africa Project, 2017.
This Briefing Paper examines how the gold rush in northern Niger
has affected the security, political, and socio-economic dynamics
of this sensitive region. The first part discusses the mechanics of
the gold rush, which started in 2014: the nature of the mining
sites, the various participants, and the (limited) role of the
state in the region. The second part focuses on the effects of the
gold rush on northern Niger: increased local wealth and new elites
on the one hand, more banditry and arms trafficking on the other.
It notes, however, that there is little evidence of gold mining
providing material or financial support to extremist groups. And
while the wealth of some miners and local businesspeople who
transport miners and supply them with necessities increased, the
local economic upturn did not spread to the national economy. The
paper concludes that future mining will need to industrialize to
access deposits deeper underground, now that surface gold deposits
are largely exhausted. This change may result in increased
socio-economic and security instability, both in northern Niger and
in the wider region.
- An elemental force: Uranium production in Africa, and
what it means to be nuclear.
/ Gabrielle Hecht. Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist, March/April
2012; 68 (2).
'Uranium from Africa was, and remains, a major source of fuel for
atomic weapons and power plants throughout the world. Uranium for
the Hiroshima bomb, for example, came from the Belgian Congo.
During any given year of the Cold War, between 20 percent and 50
percent of the Western world's uranium came from African places:
Congo, Niger, South Africa, Gabon, Madagascar, and Namibia.'

'Deserts are among the most poorly monitored and understood biomes
in the world, with evidence suggesting that their biodiversity is
declining fast. Oil exploration and exploitation can constitute an
important threat to fragmented and remnant desert biodiversity, yet
little is known about where and how intensively such developments
are taking place. This lack of information hinders local efforts to
adequately buffer and protect desert wildlife against encroachment
from anthropogenic activity. Here, we investigate the use of freely
available satellite imagery for the detection of features
associated with oil exploration in the African Sahelo-Saharan
region. We demonstrate how texture analyses combined with Landsat
data can be employed to detect ground-validated exploration sites
in Algeria and Niger.'
- Uranium from Niger; energy for France… Uranium from
Niger; energy for France; pollution for local communities:
contextualising a problematic tricycle / : Nene Diallo.European
Agency for Energy Security, 2012.
Uranium mining in Niger has raised various and significant
environmental and political concerns in the Northern area of the
country. Most of the Uranium produced in Niger is exported to
France in order to sustain France’s electricity production.
Whereas France enjoys electricity, local communities in Arlit and
Akokan suffer from pollution, unemployment, health issues and
sub-standard or non-existent education. Niger is the world’s
third to fifth largest uranium exporter with annual production
estimated at 3,243 tonnes, 64% of export revenues.
