Amerikansk militær kommunikationssatelit fra 1996.
Jordstationer til Milstar er placeret bl.a. i Fylingdales og i
Thulebasen.
All strategic and nuclear users will migrate to EHF terminals using
the Milstar satellites. These SATCOM systems will provide one of
two primary means to provide command and control of U.S. strategic
nuclear forces. The first Milstar satellite was launched on 7 Feb
94 and the second was launched on 6 Nov 95.
Milstar II is an enhancement to the Milstar I capability and is
equipped with the Extremely High Frequency (EHF) Low Data Rate
(LDR) payload of Milstar I satellites (Flights 1 and 2) and an
additional EHF Medium Data Rate (MDR) payload which provides
increased tactical capabilities, including higher data rates to
mobile forces and "nulling" that will neutralize close-in enemy
jammers.
Planer om opgradering fra 1999. Milstar afløses eller
udvides med Milsatcom i 1999.
Milstar er bl.a. styresystem til
Trident- atomubådenes ballistiske raketter og ubemandede
